A manuscript of the melody dates from 1920 with the title "Freilachs 317". The ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregovsky documented the melody on a cylinder in 1929 under the title "unknown melody" played by Itsik Triplik, but was only published later. However, the first known publication with Herman Yablokoff's lyrics was during a broadcast on an American radio station in 1932. The melody was later used in the ghettos of Warsaw, Vilna and Lodz.
