The song had been performed live since 1975. The first recording was made in 1976 after a regular record session in one take. The fact that singer Toni Krahl forgot two lines of a verse and sang two others twice was only noticed later and could therefore no longer be corrected. The first radio broadcast took place in 1977 on Stimme der DDR's “Notenbude” program, triggering an unprecedented response, which led to the release of the previous year's recording as a single in 1977. Over 100,000 copies were sold immediately.
