This piece is part of the oratorio *Le sette ultime parole di Nostro Signore*, the premiere of which took place on April 13, 1838, in Novara, Italy. It was composed the previous year. *Qual giglio* is the fifth piece (or "Word") and is also designated as "Parola quinta."
