Starting in the mid-19th century, the polka spread throughout Bohemia and the surrounding regions. Village musicians played the melodies in many variations; there were no printed sheet music. Around the turn of the century, the melody was brought to the United States by immigrants and became popular among the Bohemian, Polish, and German communities there.
