The song was first performed publicly at the Icelandic National Assembly on June 27, 1885, at Þingvellir under the title "Þingvallasöngur." Later, the song also became known under the title "Öxar við ána." The video shows a newer version of this song. The melody is from Helgi Helgason, Steingrímur Thorsteinsson has written the lyrics.
