In 1865, William Chatterton Dix wrote a poem about the birth of Jesus Christ entitled “The Manger Throne.” In 1871, the collection “Christmas Carols New and Old” by Henry Ramsden Bramley and John Stainer featured the poem set to the melody of “Greensleeves” for the first time. It is believed that John Stainer was the initiator, but this cannot be confirmed with certainty at present.
