"Blue Monday" is the best-selling 12" single of all time with over 700,000 copies. However, due to the elaborate design of the cover, there was even a slight loss of revenue for the band.
According to New Order's own statement, the song is inspired by various titles: "Our Love" by Donna Summer, "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" by Sylvester, "Uranium" by Kraftwerk and "Dirty Talk" by Klein & M.B.O.. But there are also parallels to "Gerry And The Holograms " by Gerry And The Holograms and New Order's own song "5 8 6" from 1983.
