Der Tannenbaum
(1824)
German
The melody was used in a quodlibet by Melchior Franck in 1615, but was probably composed around 1550 - the composer is unknown. In 1820, August Zarnack transformed the melody into a love song about his unfaithful lover. In 1824, Ernst Anschütz used the first verse of the Zarnack poem to compose the now familiar lyrics of the Christmas carol "Oh Tannenbaum".
