“Fremd im Land” was originally written as an English song because the artists have their roots in English-speaking countries - just like hip hop. However, they then decided to use the German language. The song criticizes the fact that Germans with a migrant background who do not look typically German feel “foreign in their own country” (fremd im eigenen Land) because they are not accepted as real Germans, but are instead labeled with prejudices. The track is from the time when German hip hop was just emerging and when Die Fantastischen Vier landed a hit with “Die da”. With their “fun hip hop”, they did not have a good standing in the camp of Advanced Chemistry, who saw hip hop as a form of expression for political protest.
The use of the sample from "Mobile Unit" is carefully chosen. It was also used as the theme tune for the political magazine "Spiegel TV Magazin" on German television and was chosen for this reason. In consideration of the political and socially critical text, the band didn't want to use just any funk sample, but something that would also transport the topic musically. The Spiegel TV melody does exactly that and is funky at the same time, band member Torch is quoted as having said in an interview.
