This version appeared in 1999 on the compilation album "Pop 2000 - Das gibt's nur einmal" (Pop 2000 - It Only Happens Once), which pays homage to the Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) movement, with contemporary artists reinterpreting hits from the 1980s.
Smudo explained that the song is about an artist's fear of entering a phase in which everything he does is praised uncritically, without any weaknesses being pointed out. "Rudi" is a self-talk of the lyrical ego about self-criticism. Rudi apparently refers to the original artist Herwig Mitteregger, whose middle name is Rudolf.
