Even before Cat Stevens had released his song on his second studio album in December 1967, P.P. Arnold (in July) and Norma Frazer (in October) released a single on the music market with this emotional ballad about the pain of a first break-up. However, they did not have much success - wrongly in our opinion. The version by Cat Stevens and, above all, the wonderful interpretation by Rod Stewart nine years later remained in the musical memory. No one breathes the lyric “Baby I try to love again but I know, first cut is the deeepest” as soulfully as Rod. An additional highlight is the guitar intro that begins at 0:22. A song to melt away to! A little bon mot on the side. After a German radio report on the court case against the woman in the USA who cut off her extremely violent husband's penis in his sleep, the station's music editors thought it was appropriate to play this song.
