“Maneater” originated from an early idea by John Oates, which initially contained reggae elements but was rejected by Daryl Hall. Instead, Hall developed a more edgy pop melody, while Sara Allen completed the lyrics. The lyrics use the figure of the “maneater” as a metaphor for a seductive but exploitative environment – inspired by the New York scene of the early 1980s. The song reached number 1 on the US charts and stayed there for four weeks; its distinctive saxophone riff became one of the defining elements of the track.
