Composed by Friml in 1920 and renamed “Chansonette” on the first recording, the piece of music with lyrics by Bob Wright and Chet Forrest became famous in 1937 as “The Donkey Serenade” in the film “The Firefly”. Originally written purely as a piano piece, it was later adapted for orchestra by Herbert Stothart. From July 15, 1942, this song was banned from being performed in Germany. The RMK had placed it on the “Fourth List of Undesirable Musical Works”.
