The authors of the song, the two Boy Meets Girl members George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, wrote it after Rubicam had seen a falling star at a Whitney Houston concert. They had already written the number 1 hit “How Will I Know” (and later “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”) and so they offered the song to Houston's record company Arista, but it was rejected.
Belinda Carlisle then recorded a demo version, but she didn't want to include the song on her 1987 album either.
So Merrill and Rubicam decided to record the song themselves, which brought them worldwide attention.
