Originally composed as a piano piece and published in New Orleans in 1919, it became very well known with lyrics by Dorothy Terriss in the revue “The Greenwich Village Follies” and became a hit of the 1920s. At its premiere on August 31, 1921, at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway, the song was performed by Richard Bold and Rosalind Fuller as a song with chimes.
