The song tells the tragic story of a friend of the band, Melanie, who died of a drug overdose. It deals with the subject of drug abuse from the perspective of a close friend who witnesses the crash and deals with feelings of guilt and questions such as “Why?”.
“Warum?” (Why?) was a huge commercial success. The song reached number 1 in the charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and stayed at the top in Germany for seven weeks. It was the band's most successful single and is one of the best-selling singles of 1997 in Germany.
