The original text first existed as a poem written by Martha Müller-Grählert in pre-Pomeranian Low German, which was first published in 1907. The melody was written by Simon Krannig in 1908.
The song is known under many titles and in different text variants, for example Ostseelied, Nordseelied, Friesenlied and Hafflied with the lyrics "Wo die Ostseewellen/Nordseewellen trecken an den Strand...".
