The melody of this song comes from Jean Sibelius. The first text "Det mörknar ute" comes from Zacharias Topelius and was translated into Finnish by Aino Suonio ("Jo joutuu ilta"). The melody was written in 1897 and published in the magazine "Kyläkirjaston kuvalehti" in the same year. Later it was used as the third song in the song cycle "Viisi joululaulua pianon säestyksellä Op 1".
