Between 1886 and 1888, Hugo Wolf set a cycle of 20 Eichendorff poems to music. The composition “Heimweh” (No. 12 in the cycle) was written on September 29, 1888, and published in 1889. The phrase “Wer in die Fremde will wandern,” often cited as a subtitle, is not part of the title. It is the first line of the poem.
