In 1825, Schubert set to music a selection of seven songs from Walter Scott’s poem cycle “The Lady of the Lake,” which were published in 1826 as op. 52; the German translation was provided by Adam Storck. However, Schubert’s melody is often set to the Latin text of the prayer “Ave Maria, gratia plena,” which Charles Gounod also used for his “Ave Maria.”
