“Hello Mary Lou Goodbye Heart” resembles an earlier song, “Merry, Merry Lou” (see there), which was written by Cayet Mangiaracina and recorded in 1957. When “Hello Mary Lou” was released, the copyright holder of “Merry, Merry Lou” sued for plagiarism and a settlement was reached. Mangiaracina was named as co-writer of “Hello Mary Lou” and received a share of the song's royalties.
