Zilphia Horton introduced the song to Pete Seeger in 1949. He changed the first line to "We Shall Overcome" and added a few verses. Frank Hamilton and Guy Carawan popularized the song further and so are credited with Zilphia Horton and Pete Seeger as the authors.
