When exactly this song, which later became a standard in the bluegrass scene under the name "Black Mountain Rag", was first performed is not known exactly. According to several sources, Leslie Keith heard the Stripling Brothers and the fiddler Jim Montgomery in Birmingham (Alabama) in the late 20s, who gave him the inspiration for this song. Especially parts from "The Lost Child" were incorporated into this piece. In 1948 a recording of this song (Rich-R-Tone 428) was made at the Rich-R-Tone label in Johnson City (Tennessee), but it was never released. It is not known when the recording in this video was made.
