Song View

Peter Faber wrote the lyrics in 1847. The following year, at Faber's request, Emil Horneman composed the now-familiar melody. Originally titled Juletræet, the song was initially sung to the tune of "Komme hvo, som komme vil" (also known as "I en kælder sort som kul"). With Horneman's melody and the new title "Højt fra træets grønne top," the song quickly became one of Denmark's most popular Christmas carols. The original version contained ten verses, each dedicated to a member of the Faber family.
