Originally written in 1939 for the musical “Ulysses Africanus” (which was never completed), Kurt Weill used the song for the musical “Lost in the Stars”, which premiered on October 30, 1949 at the Music Box Theatre in New York City - where it was sung by Todd Duncan. In 1943, Bost released a triple box set with six songs by Kurt Weill, sung by Lotte Lenya.
