The origin of the lyrics of this Christmas carol is unknown, possibly originating in the German-speaking world. Two different melodies to the same text exist. The older one by James R. Murray is mainly sung in evangelical churches in the USA. In the video this melody is heard. The younger one (created in 1895) is by William James Kirkpatrick and is sung in Great Britain.
