Song Highlight – Editor’s Pick
Cher's version of “Walking In Memphis” was used in the X-Files episode "The Post-Modern Prometheus" (season 5, episode 5), which aired in the USA on November 29, 1997. This episode, written and directed by Chris Carter, is one of the most unusual in the series: it is shot in black and white, paying homage to classic monster movies such as Frankenstein, and has a surreal, often humorous tone. In the plot, Mulder and Scully investigate reports of a mysterious, mutated creature – the “Great Mutato” - in a small town. At the end of the episode, Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) dance to Cher's “Walking In Memphis” in a romantic final scene.
There were plans to include Cher in the episode. She was a well-known admirer of The X-Files. However, it didn't come to realization because Cher was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts – she was working on other projects at the time.
She also initially felt the script was “cheesy” and was unenthusiastic about playing herself instead of taking on a real acting role. However, after seeing the finished episode, she changed her mind and expressed regret at not being involved. She recognized the special charm and quality of the episode and said she wished she had taken the opportunity.
