This aria was attributed to the Italian composer Alessandro Stradella (17th century); however, this attribution is today accepted as incorrect. Its true authorship, remains, however, unresolved. The composers Louis Niedermeyer, François-Joseph Fétis, and Rossini have also been cited as possible authors of the aria, but no evidence supporting these claims is known to exist. In the 19th century, Niedermeyer composed operas in which the composer Stradella appears as a character—a fact that could explain why he was suggested as the author of this song.
