The lyrics were written by Naphtali Herz Imber in 1878. Set to music by Samuel Cohen, the song was probably first sung by him in his home town of Rishon LeZion in 1888. It has been the anthem of the Zionist movement since 1897 and the national anthem of Israel since May 14, 1948.
