Manuel M. Ponce wrote the song in 1902, but did not register it under copyright law. It is not known whether this was by mistake, because he was unaware of its meaning, or whether it was intentional. From 1909 to 1915 he taught at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City. The Mexican copyright law was enacted in 1902, so there was certainly the possibility of registration. It is not known that Ponce died completely impoverished in 1948, as is often reported. But he never received any royalties from this composition.
