The song is from the opera "Marie Galante," which premiered instrumentally in Paris on December 22, 1934, and was described by the author as a tango-habanera. The following year, Roger Fernay wrote French lyrics for the melody, which, in this combination, became a frequently performed jazz standard. A German version by Leo Kowald was not published until 2012.
